Grid vs. Martingale EAs: What is the Difference?
If you browse the MQL5 market, you’ll notice that 90% of the top-selling Expert Advisors use either Grid or Martingale strategies. While they produce beautiful, smooth equity curves, they carry catastrophic hidden risks.
The Grid Strategy
A grid system places buy and sell orders at regular intervals above and below a set price. It profits from the natural oscillation of the market.
- Pros: Extremely profitable in ranging markets. Doesn’t require precise entry timing.
- Cons: If a strong, unidirectional trend occurs without retracements, the floating drawdown can quickly exceed the account margin, resulting in a margin call.
The Martingale Strategy
Martingale originated in 18th-century France as a betting strategy. In trading, it involves doubling your position size after every loss.
- Pros: You only need one winning trade to recover all previous losses plus a profit.
- Cons: A losing streak of 6-7 trades will exponentially increase lot sizes, requiring massive capital to sustain.
The Verdict
Both systems are mathematically guaranteed to fail over an infinite timeline unless paired with a hard equity stop. If you choose to trade them, you must regularly withdraw your initial deposit.
We recommend focusing on trend-following or mean-reversion EAs with strict stop losses. Review our Top Ranked EAs for safer alternatives.
